Day 1

Day 1

This morning my phone was still an hour behind from my layover in London, so I woke up late. My official first day in Italy and I am already a hot mess. The group of students and I started our day with a typical Italian breakfast: a hot beverage (I got the tea) and a pastry (mine had a sweet yellow pudding inside, similar to a donut). I wish that Italians ate 10 course meals for breakfast because on our tour right after I was starving. I swear you could hear my insides growl as I walked up and down the cobblestone streets of Urbino.

After our tour the students were left to find food on their own and find their way back to the university. Somehow my friends and I managed to buy a slice of pizza, a glass of wine, and a box of strawberries. Self high-five.

After that, we had a very lovely three course meal where I tried to set up one of interpreters with an attractive Italian waiter, which it turned out, he had a girlfriend. So that particular endeavor failed, but as the beautiful and talented Haley Dunphy said on an episode of Modern Family: you can't pick the first one you see; window shop. So goal: set up my Italian interpreter with a hot Italian.

Later that night, everyone split up and I had drinks with a mix of Americans and Italians. Thankfully the Italians knew a little english, but there were definitely times of utter confusion. All in all, there were laughs upon laughs upon laughs.

What surprised me the most so far has been the nightlife culture. I'm sure I will have more to say later, but tonight, most of my companions were from a dance party that took place right by our dorms (literally I fell asleep last night to the beat of the bass). I thought that when I went to a bar or get together or even a marketplace that there would be music in Italian-nope. There was plenty of songs in English. In fact, Yeah by Usher (remember that song??? I bought his entire confessions cd because of that one song back in the day) came on, among other classics, and all the Americans danced and sang along. The Italians just hung around and only got more into the music until midnight or later. Which also mind-boggles me-when do they sleep?? I heard Europeans party late, but when do they have time to take a siesta? Seriously, I'm considering vampires. They are all so skinny too. So far I haven't seen a fat European (America, I love you, but maybe you should go on a diet).
